Febrile Seizures..

A while back I told you I would write about things that totally seem startling about parenting to me. Things that if I had a baby I would really want to know ahead of time. I wrote a post about babies getting flat heads from sleeping on their backs (who knew??).

Ok, so today I’m gonna write about febrile seizures.  I unfortunately found out all about them earlier this week. My best friend Carrie went to Florida on Saturday night for business leaving her husband Josh to take care of their 18 month old son Emile. Monday afternoon Josh was called by daycare to pick Emile up because he was running a fever. Later that afternoon while talking to Telehealth about how much medication to give him he felt Emile become heavy in his arms. He looked over to see his son with eyes rolled back, mouth open, lips blue having a seizure that lasted almost five minutes. How terrifying is that! Telehealth sent an ambulance and an hour later I met him at the hospital. At that point Emile was eating a vending machine turkey sandwich and offering up high fives. Josh, however was still pretty shaken as any parent would be. Turns out Emile had a febrile seizure, they are onset by high fevers. This is fairly common in infants, up to five percent of babies have this happen and they do outgrow it. So in the end not super serious. But if you don’t know that it’s something that happens it’s really frigging scary.

I’ve spent the past few days helping out so Josh can get some work done. Today there was a brief moment where his fever let up and he was back to his fantastic happy little self! Even when he’s crazy sick he’s so completely adorable!
