Maya Abdominal & Sacral Therapy

How It Works

Abdominal Therapy uses gentle, non-invasive techniques to:

  • Support optimal positioning and mobility of abdominal and pelvic organs

  • Improve circulation of blood and lymph

  • Enhance nerve communication

  • Release congestion, restriction, and scar tissue

  • Encourage the flow of vital energy (chu’lel)

Lineage & History

Abdominal Therapy is rooted in the traditional healing practices of the Maya of Central America, where the abdomen is understood to be the center of health—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

This work was brought into contemporary practice by Dr. Rosita Arvigo, a naturopathic physician, herbalist, and midwife who lived and practiced in Belize for over a decade. During that time, she apprenticed with Don Elijio Panti, a highly respected Maya healer (h’men) known for his deep knowledge of medicinal plants, spiritual healing, and traditional abdominal massage.

Don Elijio Panti was one of the last traditional healers in his region to carry extensive ancestral knowledge of Maya medicine. His approach to healing emphasized the integration of body, mind, spirit, and relationship to nature. He taught that many illnesses begin with congestion, restriction, or displacement in the abdomen, and that restoring flow in this area is key to overall health.

Through her apprenticeship, Dr. Arvigo was entrusted with learning and sharing these techniques. She later developed a structured system to teach this work—bridging traditional Maya wisdom with modern anatomical understanding—while maintaining respect for its cultural roots.

Today, Abdominal Therapy continues to be practiced worldwide by trained practitioners, preserving this lineage while supporting people in reconnecting with their bodies and their innate capacity to heal.

Myofascial & Therapeutic Bodywork

Myofascial bodywork is a gentle, hands-on approach that works with the fascia—the connective tissue system that surrounds and supports muscles, joints, and organs throughout the body. When this tissue becomes restricted due to injury, stress, repetitive movement, or emotional holding patterns, it can lead to pain, stiffness, and limited mobility.

In my practice, I use a slow, intentional style of myofascial release combined with targeted trigger point therapy to help unwind these patterns of tension. This work supports not only the muscles, but also the joints—helping to improve mobility, reduce strain, and create more ease in movement.

This approach can be especially helpful for:

  • Lower back pain

  • Neck and shoulder tension or stiffness

  • Joint discomfort and restricted movement

  • Postural imbalances

  • Chronic muscular pain patterns

Trigger point techniques focus on specific areas of muscular contraction—often felt as “knots”—that can refer pain to other parts of the body. Through steady, precise pressure, these areas are encouraged to release, allowing the body to soften and reorganize in a more natural way.

Sessions are slow, attentive, and guided by the body’s own pace. Rather than forcing change, this work invites the nervous system to settle, creating space for deeper and longer-lasting release.

Alongside the physical techniques, I bring an awareness of the body’s energetic landscape. Fascia can hold not only physical tension, but also emotional and energetic experiences. As the body unwinds, many people notice a greater sense of calm, clarity, and connection within themselves.

This integrated approach supports your body in finding more freedom, balance, and resilience—so you can move and feel with greater ease in your daily life.
